The Dates’ Ask Again Later

The Dates’ Ask Again Later

From the opening jangle of “Any Other Nite” to the Big Star-ish “Summer Girls” or “California Under the Sea”, the debut album from LA’s The Dates is one of this year’s early treats. Ask Again Later delivers on so many levels. It’s chiming guitars and smooth harmonies will suck you in. Then, those oh-so gorgeous melodies will hook you for good.

Their knack for hooky choruses and lo-fi production is reminiscent of those early Shoes singles we all know and love. Such is the case with the album’s first track, “Any Other Nite”. Fans of Big Star will immediately feel at home with songs like “Star”, “Summer Girls” or “Friday Nite @ Vineland”, the latter of which has a memorable, sing along chorus and great harmonies.

The cover of Buddy Holly’s “Love’s Made a Fool of You” is probably the only track that doesn’t really distinguish itself for me. But then covers of classics rarely do.

The Dates’ Ask Again Later comes HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Pick up your digital or CD copy at The Dates’ Bandcamp page. For those who prefer vinyl, your copy of The Dates’ Ask Again Later is waiting for you at Amazon.

  1. I cannot find a website showing any tour dates and anything about the band. Is there anything?

    • Hey Chris – They have no website to the best of my knowledge. I can only suggest contacting Burger Records ([email protected]) or visit their bandcamp page. On the bandcamp page you’ll find a link under contact/help. I know that’s not much to go on but I hope it’ll be of some help. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment.
