Power Pop’s The Genuine Fakes: Is “3” Times the Charm?

Power Pop’s The Genuine Fakes: Is “3” Times the Charm?

Ever since the pandemic, The Genuine Fakes have chosen to work 4 songs at a time. Releasing 3 Eps (Extended Play Volumes 1, 2, and 3) in the last several years, their new LP is simply a compilation derived from their occasional output. Although they’re hardly a household name, the band has developed a dedicated following. Collectively entitled “3”, this latest release is classic power pop with all the bells and whistles, said bells being guitar jangle, great harmonies and catchy choruses.

Perfectly Pleasing Power Pop

There is a consistent esthetic throughout, born in the grooves of old power pop records by Fountains of Wayne, The Posies and Jellyfish. Although 3 is a collection of singles, it sounds as if it could have been recorded in one session. And since their template is so consistent, let’s reference our past review of Extended Play Volume 3, as it applies to the LP as well:

“On the infectiously good ‘Two Fine Lovers’, the Beatlesque interlude two minutes into the song make for a wonderful touch.  And the vocal calisthenics are noteworthy.  The uptempo ‘Receiver’ is another catchy number and again, the bands’ vocal prowess is staggering.  Although things slow down on the more contemplative ‘Gigatonne’, the crunchy guitars and dynamic harmonies make for outstanding listening.”

The band are: Johan Bergqvist (vocals, guitar, keyboards),  Mårten Bengtsson (bass) and Johan Sundin (drums). As you may have surmised by now, they’re from Sweden. And yet, listening to Bergqvist, you would never detect it. However, you will hear their lush harmonies, hooky choruses and guitar driven melodies – and that’s worth both your listening time and a few sheckles.
