Mod Lang – Borrowed Time

The new one from Detroit’s Mod Lang, Borrowed Time is one of the most pleasant surprises of 2026. Released back in February of this year, the LP was tracked mostly live and bounced to reel-to-reel, capturing an urgency reminiscent of Get The Knack.

Named after a Big Star song, the band delivers pure power-pop and rock & roll steeped in Beatles/Stones tradition, Big Star spirit, and the occasional glam flash. Themes of hopeless romanticism, everyday disillusionment, and urban alienation run through 10 hook-laden songs. Opener “What I Can’t Have” sets the tone with the aforementioned guitars and Beatlesque vocals.

“Cocamoda” is a driving little tune that sits somewhere between The Sweet and Dr. Feelgood. “Try Your Love” will transport you right back to the 60’s. “Big House” busts out of the gate with driving guitars and crashing drums. “In the Morning” strips to tight harmonies and acoustic guitars, making for a more subdued closing.

The four-piece consists of Antonio Keka and Alex Belfie (guitars/vocals), Ava East (bass/vocals), and Ben Taber (drums). Simple, direct, and unpretentious, Borrowed Time proves the Motor City’s newest Fab Four are headed in a very promising direction.
