Bob Hillman – King of the Bees

Bob Hillman’s King of the Bees is a taut six-song power-pop EP that trades his folk-rock roots for gleaming hooks and ringing guitars. Recorded remotely in 2020, it features producer-bassist Jonny Flaugher, Elvis Costello drummer Pete Thomas, Dawes guitarist Trevor Menear, and keyboardist Peter Adams.

“The Invisible World” is a strong opener. “Interesting Friends” busts out with a propulsive beat and tuneful guitar solo. “American Smoke” keeps the momentum going with Hillman’s conversational vocal style and plenty of snap and personality from drummer Pete Thomas. The psyche tinged guitar on this track adds that certain something, making it a real standout.

Hillman’s wry, literate lyrics remain the constant—clever without getting too cute. At roughly 22 minutes the EP follows the old showbiz axiom – it definitely leaves us wanting more. This set of songs definitely grow on you with repeated listens. Fans of Brutal Youth-era Costello or sharp, melody-first songwriting will find it to be very satisfying.
