The Top 10 Halloween Songs of All Time
Ever since I was a kid and got my first copy of Bobby Pickett’s Monster Mash, I was hooked on novelty songs. If memory serves, the flip side of the record was “Blood Bank Blues”, and almost equally silly song. You have to love this stuff.
Every year I develop a play list for the holiday, and this time is no different. Although only a couple of these songs would have made a top ten pop songs of the year list, they’re all great songs in their own right. Here’s my Halloween Top Ten for your review:
1) Werewolves of London – Warren Zevon
2) Creature From the Black Lagoon – Dave Edmunds (written by Graham Parker)
3) Thriller – Michael Jackson
4) Monster Mash – Bobby “Boris” Pickett and the Crypt Kickers
5) Scary Monsters (& Super Creeps) – David Bowie
6) Psycho Killer – Talking Heads
7) Put a Spell on You – Screamin’Jay Hawkins
8) Warm Leatherette – The Normal (or Grace Jones version, almost as good)
9) Halloween – Siouxsie and the Banshees
10) Things To Do in Denver When You’re Dead – Warren Zevon
Also on my Halloween play list:
Invisible Man – Elvis Costello
Dead Man’s Curve – Jan & Dean
The Gift – Velvet Underground
Marie Provost – Nick Lowe
My Baby’s the Star in a Driver’s Ed Movie – Blotto
Boris the Spider – The Who
They’re Coming to Take Me Aawy – Napoleon XIV
Dead Souls – Joy Division
Diane – Husker Du
Maxwell’s Silver Hammer – The Beatles
My Name is Mud – Primus
Let me know if you can think of any other good ones. I always like to add to my play list.
