Geoff Palmer & Lucy Ellis – Your Face Is Weird
The way the story goes, Geoff Palmer (of The Connection) had always wanted to record the John Prine penned “In Spite of Ourselves”. Having met Lucy Ellis, he at last had the duet partner he was looking for to record the song. Then the pandemic hit and what was originally intended to be one half of a single became a much larger endeavor. Seven more tracks would follow resulting in Your Face Is Weird, the new LP on Rum Bar Records.
Your Face Is Weird consists of 4 covers and 4 originals, all of which are worthy of attention. The Prine cover is stellar (after all, it’s John Prine) but there’s so much more here. Hope is the common thematic thread throughout with the aforementioned tune as well as originals like “SWIM”, a delightfully poppy number and “Crash of the Music”, more reminiscent of Palmer’s earlier work with Brad Marino and The Connection. And Sam Cooke’s “Havin’ a Party” is a great, great choice of covers.
In short, Geoff Palmer & Lucy Ellis’ Your Face Is Weird is fun, hopeful and guaranteed to cheer up even the most cynical amongst us. Check it out at Rum Bar Records.
