David Woodard – Everything in Between
The latest EP from Nashville’s David Woodard entitled Everything in Between harkens back to the mid 60’s Beatles sound that power pop fans know so well and love so much. A thumping kick drum, chiming guitar and tambourine lead to a catchy chorus and some wonderful harmonies in the opener, “We’re Not Coming Back”. “Nine Hundred Ninety Nine” is a real earworm with a bouncy beat and the kind of chorus that not only sticks but has you singing along. Everybody loves a counting song and “Nine Hundred….” is one of my favorites of the year.
The cover of Nick Lowe’s “What’s so Funny (‘bout Peace, Love & Understanding)” is an interesting choice. The band stays pretty much true to the original. I would have preferred a new interpretation as no one (and I mean no one) can top Lowe’s original version – Not even EC. That said, Woodard does a more than credible job with it. The disc concludes with the shimmering guitars and lovely harmonies of a bonus track called “Waiting for Christmas”.
