Marc Valentine – Uncommon Side Effects

Marc Valentine – Uncommon Side Effects

Marc Valentine’s new one, Uncommon Side Effects, is a power pop lover’s wet dream. Released on Little Steven’s Wicked Cool Records, the third solo album from the former Last Great Dreamer frontman delivers ten tight, hooky tracks that jump off of the “vinyl”. Bursting with sparkling melodies, razor-sharp riffs, and irresistible choruses, it’s the sonic equivalent of a summer drive beside your girl with the top down.

Valentine channels classic power pop and pop-punk—think Buzzcocks meet The Pixies—while adding his own distinct swagger. Opener “NY UAP” explodes out of the gate with thunderous guitar crunch and a hooky chorus that earns repeat listens. “High In The Underground” bounces along to an infectious beat. Mid-album highlights like “Hanging On A Dream” and “Half-Moon Pendant” offer a more reserved, contemplative demeanor.

Produced by Dave Draper (Wildhearts, Dodgy, The Professionals), the album sounds crisp and alive. Big, crunchy Weezer-like guitars dominate. Themes of survival, connection, and finding light in dark times thread through the entire album, making the “record” feel hopeful while emotionally grounded.

A contender for the end-of-year power pop top ten, Uncommon Side Effects is essential listening for anyone craving melody, guitar punch, and pure fun. It’s what the best of late 70’s and early 80’s radio used to sound like. RIYL: Buzzcocks, Weezer, New York Dolls, Pixies, 70’s college radio. Get Marc Valentine’s new one at Amazon Music, Apple Music or Kool Kat Musik. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
