Sloan – Based on the Best Seller

There have been some great Canadian bands over the years – The Guess Who, BTO and Klaatu immediately come to mind. But for my money, Sloan takes the cake for their sheer ability to blend punchy energy with big harmonies and even bigger hooks. Based on the Best Seller is their fourteenth studio album, stylistically picking up where 2022’s Steady left off.

Still Relevant After All These Years

Everyone’s  a sucker for a great sing-along chorus.  “Dream Destroyer” is sure to scratch that itch with its glam inspired beat, big guitars and memorable lyrics. The breezy, piano driven “Open Your Umbrellas” is a fine change of direction while “Baxter” borrows from the Revolver era. While the harmonies are a highlight throughout the entire album, this is especially true with “So Far Down” “Fortune Teller” is a front to back hook featuring those same harmonies, trumpets, organ and a chorus that one simply cannot forget. Sloan has been crafting fine power pop since the 90’s and it doesn’t look like they’ll stop any time soon.

Sloan’s Based of the Best Seller is a must for any power pop aficionado. Every member of the band writes well, giving their sound just a little more body than most. The hooks are plentiful and the lyrical content is thoughtful. Get it at bandcamp. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
