Eytan Mirsky’s All Over the Map
Eytan Mirsky’s latest, All Over the Map, is finally here and as the title might suggest, it’s stylistically diverse. That said, fans of Mirsky’s work can always count on two things to remain constant – lyrical wit and catchy choruses.
After only three songs, this album captured me completely. The opening track, “Did What I Came To Do”, has the kind of sound that used to make for hit records. It kinds reminds me of those old Arthur Alexander records like “You Gotta Move On”. Its philosophical lyrics hit home and the string arrangements are lovely. That’s Claudia Chopek on violin, by the way.
Rockpile Revisited
The rockin’ “Apologize In Advance” may remind some of an old favorite, Rockpile. I can hear Dave Edmunds singing it in my head. That said, Mirsky sings his songs better than anyone can while delivering the smart remarks of a hopelessly irresponsible cad. “For all the things I’m gonna do and not do when I get the chance, please forgive me. I apologize in advance.” Jon Gordon’s guitar work is a highlight as well.
From the opening horns of “Inside Job”, I knew this one was a winner. It’s a soulful number complete with the aforementioned horns, handclaps, punchy sax, and great backing vocals from John James. Gordon’s keyboard work is not to be overlooked here, either.
