Dominic Lavoie’s Round Trip Pushes the Power Pop Envelope
When I read the credits on the new Dominic Lavoie album and realized that the producer was none other than Steve Berlin (The Blasters, Los Lobos), I had a feeling it was going to be something special. I wasn’t wrong. Appropriately named Round Trip, it crosses several different musical paths; jangly guitar pop, glam, funk and most significantly, power pop. Every song reminds me of a piece of the past and yet, it’s refreshingly new.
Power Pop, Americana & More
“Midlife Highlife” demonstrates a self-awareness that’s refreshing. The regimented beat creates an aura of inevitability while the wonderful harmonies make this track pure ear candy. “Saints and Queens” is first rate power pop in a similar vein to the work of Dom Mariani (DM3). The unexpected horn arrangement makes this one extra special. The lyrically and musically imaginative “Martin the Martian” is super-fun with its guitar jangle, unorthodox arrangements (again!) and electric organ tweeks putting it over the top.
Two of my favorite tracks of 2025 are “SunKist Bliss 90’s SuperHaze” and “Karmic Rodeo”. On first listen, the former reminded me of some of the 90’s grunge bands – not quite as much feedback but melodically more engaging. I keep going back to it. It’s almost hypnotic.
Saving the best for last, there’s “Karmic Rodeo”. It starts out as an irresistible piece of Americana with its harmonica intro and requisite guitar twang. But don’t get comfortable ’cause you’re about to veer off into a weird mind-warp. Then suddenly, both your feet are back on the ground. What a ride!
Get Dominic Lavoie’s New One Here
I had as much fun listening to Dominic Lavoie’s new one, Round Trip, as I have any album this year. It’s that rare release that’s inventive and scratches that itch for hooky choruses. The harmonies are exquisite and the arrangements extraordinary. And there’s a Steve Berlin – that’s even better than a Martian sighting. Get your copy at Dominic’s Bandcamp page. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
