Cupid’s Carnival – Clapham Junction

The last release from Cupid’s Carnival, a full length album entitled Everything is Love, made 2016’s top twenty power pop albums list. The heavy Beatles influence is on display even more so with their newest effort, a 6 song EP called Clapham Junction. And while two of the tracks are alternative versions, it’s a really good listen from start to finish.

The lead off track, “She Don’t Care”, is a bouncy little track that you can imagine hearing The Beatles or Dave Clark Five doing on The Ed Sullivan show. It’s a no-brainer single. Most of the time, alternative versions are superfluous but in this case, the “Flamenco Version” is an interesting juxtaposition to the more orthodox take.

“Clapham Junction” and “Yoko’s Smiling” have a decidedly Lennon-esque flavor to them but they’re equally as satisfying. The piano driven “Looking for Rainbows” rounds out a group of intelligently written, expertly performed songs. Clapham Junction is much more than a pale imitation. It’s the real deal. I can’t wait for the album I hope is in the making.
