Paul McCann – Alter Ego
If this is your introduction to Paul McCann, you’ll be immediately struck by the variety in tempo and extraordinary arrangements on Alter Ego, his second album. What is most evident though, is his penchant for creating memorable hooks.
“Lost in this Moment” is a great example with its guitar jangle, lovely harmonies and catchy chorus. The inventive arrangements within Alter Ego will occasionally remind one of Jellyfish (Roger Joseph Manning Jr. makes a guest appearance here) and at other times, Glenn Tilbrook. Such is the case with “Where has the Music Gone” where the horn arrangement is a defining touch.
The short and bouncy “The Voice of Reason” is another highlight with its mega-hook of a chorus and irresistible farfisa organ. And the Latin flare of “Call off the Dogs” is a really nice change of pace – quite literally. The tempo change within this song makes it particularly engaging. And where else are you likely to hear someone rhyme gone with phenomenon?
In addition to McCann and Manning Jr., significant contributions are made by: Martin Quinn, Andrew Quinn, Jason Falkner, Ken Stringfellow, Gary Lucas, James Quinn, and Charlotte Hatherley.
