Warmbabies – Let’s Live Underground 

I have no idea what passes for good pop in France. However, with an image of a Rickenbacker 12 string on the cover, one has a pretty good idea what The Warmbabies, a group of power pop veterans from Nice, have in mind with their 15 track debut entitled Let’s Live Underground.

It’s an appetizing blend of 60’s thru 80’s power pop reminiscent at various times of bands such as The Flamin’ Groovies, Stems, Peter Case‘s Plimsouls and most of all, The Beatles. One hears it in the final G6 of “It’s Not Her” or the yeah yeah yeah’s that embellish “I Should Have Killed That Love”. And the harmonies work perfectly throughout the entire recording. Mark Galliani’s vocals are also somewhat reminiscent of John Lennon’s, especially in his phrasing of the language.

Other standouts include “You Should Never Have Crossed My Way” (especially the guitars!), the driving beat of “Last Days of Summer”, and the acoustic twang of “When You Walk Into My Room”. There are fifteen songs in all, each one guaranteed to put a smile on the face of any seasoned fan of 60’s British Invasion pop.
