The Spongetones’ 40th Anniversary Reboot

The Spongetones’ 40th Anniversary Reboot

Coming out of a pandemic, one can’t get better news than this; The Spontetones’ 40th Anniversary Reboot is almost upon us. It’ll take place on August 14 at The McGlohon Theatre in Charlotte (details below) and promises to be spectacular fun.

For the uninitiated (of which there are few but what the Hell), The Spongetones are best known for the power pop classics “My Girl Maryanne”, “She Goes Out with Everybody”, “Skinny” (used later as the theme to NBC News World Now) and the hit albums Beat Music and Torn Apart. Parke Puterbaugh of Rolling Stone called Beat Music “the sort of album that’ll have twelve different people picking twelve different favorite cuts. Get hip—tune into the SpongeTones”.

I had the opportunity to see The Spongetones a few years back, pre-pandemic, and they were fabulous. Those in attendance (and it was a sold-out crowd) were treated to all the hits as well as some well chosen covers over a glorious three-hour show. I learned that a Spongetones show is unlike any other. Folks you’ve never met before engage you in idle chatter and make you feel like you’re among friends. It’s different and wonderful. Here’s what you need to know:

Date: Saturday Aug 14 – 8pm

Place: McGlohon Theatre at Spirit Square

           345 N. College St., Charlotte

Phone: (704) 372-1000

So get out and enjoy some post-pandemic fun. You earned it.
