Johnathan Pushkar – Compositions

My familiarity with Johnathan Pushkar goes back only so far as the JEM Records tribute to John Lennon (2020). With his latest LP entitled Compositions, Pushkar gives us a handful of Beatles inspired tunes with a little Beach Boys thrown in for good measure.

The LP leads off with “Any Second Now”, a very hummable slice of 60’s style pop. The acoustic approach and positive message of “Gonna Be Alright” is a pleasant segue to the album’s best track.  “Does What She Does” owns a very catchy chorus coupled with Beach Boys styled harmonies making for a very pleasant listen.

All of the songs on the LP were written or co-written by Pushkar with the exception of McCartney’s “Junior’s Farm”. McCartney & Wings drummer Geoff Britton joins Pushkar for a cover that is true to the original and an old favorite of mine.

Compositions isn’t ground breaking by any means. I don’t think Pushkar meant it to be. However, it serves as a pleasant diversion and a return to better times. With this past year’s unrelenting upheaval, it’s especially welcomed.
