The Easy Button – Lost On Purpose

The Easy Button – Lost On Purpose

Slices of my every day life put to music. That’s what I hear each time I listen to Lost On Purpose by The Easy Button. Like a Rockwell painting refashioned for the modern age by Adam Schlesinger or Chris Collingwood. I can identify with these songs.

From the Beach Boys harmonies in the opening instrumental (if there are harmonies, is it really an instrumental?) to the final of 22 tracks, the band shares with us a varied palette of influences and aural confections. The pure pop of “Fast Ones” is an immediate rush while the lyrics speak to every wannabe songwriter. “Beach Singer Man” infuses humor and hope into a potentially depressing existence.

One half Fountains of Wayne and one half Weezer, “Up and Comer” is an immediate favorite. “Antsy” has a country swing to it. With it’s unforgettable melody, “She Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” is the stuff the radio hits of yesteryear were made of. And in “Forever Is OK with Me”, we hear the influence of Weezer once again.

My favorite track however, is reminiscent of Carteret, New Jersey’s favorite sons, The Smithereens.  Not only is the lyrical content more along the lines of the late, great Pat DiNizio, the dominant guitar riff is reminiscent of the band, too. Tune everything down a half step and it may fool some people.
