The Master Plan – Grand Cru
Fans of old school garage will absolutely love the new album from The Master Plan. Consisting of former members of the Fleshtones, Dictators and Waxing Poetic, they can legitimately claim the moniker of “super group”. But be advised the new album entitled Grand Cru does not consist of new material. Instead, they’ve taken prime cuts from Colossus of Destiny (2004) and Maximum Respect (2010) and given them a fresh coat of paint. Not every track is a winner but there are some highlights here for sure.
The Fleshtones and Dictators have always been a couple of traveling frat parties – a good time waiting to happen wherever they go. That’s the attitude that makes songs like “Bar-B-Q” and “14th Street” the perfect summer party soundtrack. “What’s Up With That?” is an absolute blast, too.
Way back in 1997, The Fleshtones recorded one of their best albums. More Than Skin Deep had several killer cuts, one of which is covered here. “I Wanna Feel Something Now” is the best moment on the album for me. The song has aged extraordinarily well.
Grand Cru are: Keith Streng (The Fleshtones), Andy Shernoff (The Dictators), Bill Milheizer (The Fleshtones) and Paul Johnson (Waxing Poetic).
