Redd Kross – Redd Kross (The Red Album)
They had a celebrity grace one of their album covers. A member of the band married a Go-Go. Curt Kobain once criticized the band for being “too happy” (more on that later). They’re the subject of a brand new documentary. And yet, Redd Kross has managed to avoid fame as if it were a plague. Their latest release is yet another celebration of the pop-punk esthetic, a place where power meets bubblegum worthy hooks. Finally, this one just might make them famous. But I doubt it.
Stylistically Diverse, Collectively Powerful
There’s a lot to unpack here and it’s all quite impressive. The band delves into Beatle inspired psych-pop with the clever and memorable “Good Times Propaganda Band”. Then there’s the straight up power pop of “What’s In It For You?” with its glorious guitar feedback, tempo change and studio trickery. The Nirvana inflected “Way Too Happy” is Redd Kross’ answer to comments once made by frontman Kobain. And “Stunt Queen” is top level garage rock. While every one of these tracks are stylistically unique, they’re all powerful in its own way.
However, for pure pop goodness, I’m going with “Candy Coloured Catastrophe”. The 1-2-3-4 count leads to an understated acoustic guitar and opening verse before the chorus blows up in your face. It’s half grunge and half glam. It’s Explosive.
