Philip Creamer – Creamer
Here’s another power pop best of from 2018 – one that somehow slipped though the cracks, as it were. Creamer has a Big Star flair that more than captures the imagination. And with shades of Todd Rundgren and Eric Carmen, too, one might call it the sublime sound of the 70’s.
The first thing you’ll notice is Philip Creamer’s vocal range. It’s astounding. The musicianship is superb throughout the disk, too. But most of all, the songs are hooky and engaging.
“Record Machine” has all the earmarks of a would-be hit if this were 1975. The harmonies are wonderful. The album reaches it’s peak with the Emmitt Rhodes like “Bad as You”. It’s melodic bliss. You’ll be hard pressed to find a more radio friendly song from last year.
