Nick Frater – Earworms
It takes some guts to name an album Earworms. Having drawn inspiration from a myriad of influences – from glam to pop, ELO to Queen, Nick Frater delivers big time on his album title’s implied promise.
The opening single, “It’s All Rumours” is a story about an affair through the lens of the paparazzi. Having recruited Roger Manning Jr. (Jellyfish) to provide background vocals, this track is so catchy that it would easily have been a hit back in the days when melodic music dominated radio.
The piano driven “What’s With Your Heavy Heart” would have made a nice B side to McCartney & Wings’ “Silly Love Songs”. “Star Crossed” captures the smooth, easy listening sound of the 70’s.
Remember back to Queen’s first album, Sheer Heart Attack. You’ll hear similar vocal calisthenics in the album’s final Track, “How To Survive Somebody”. It’s the record’s high point and leave us wanting more – much more.
Nick Frater’s Earworms is yet another terrific offering from Big Stir Records. The album’s engaging melodies, spot on harmonies and top notch production make it one of 2021’s real winners. GET YOUR COPY HERE.
