CD Review: Nato Coles Live at Grumpy’s

Nato Coles has a reputation for being a dynamic live performer so it’s only natural that Rum Bar Records should release Nato Coles Live at Grumpy’s.

Live releases can disappoint when the sets are simply regurgitations of the studio recordings. Fortunately, Live at Grumpy’s is an interesting selection of songs, a couple from a previous Blue Diamond Band studio release entitled Promises To Deliver, some favorites from previous Nato bands and a new original for those who crave new material.

One of the disc’s early tracks, “Coffee Cup”, is an excellent track and a new one to me although Radio Faces fans will recognize it. Coles borrows from Martha and the Vandellas “Dancing in the Streets” for the opening of “Econoline”, setting the mood for more to come. The party mood continues with “Sweet Baby” as the song transitions to a chorus of the Channel/Cobb hit “Hey Baby, Will You Be My Girl”.

Used Kids fans will enjoy hearing “Silver and Gold” and “An Honorable Man”. The highlight for me is the new track. “Standing On The Corner Alone” has balls and a killer hook for a chorus.

Nato Coles Live at Grumpy’s is being released to support a Summer/Fall tour that is to include San Diego, LA, Seattle and Salt Lake City, among many other stops. If Live at Grumpy’s is indicative of a typical live show, I’d make it my business to be there for one (or more).
