Mr. Bruce Gordon – One Tall Order
We all know Mr. Bruce Gordon (or Mr. Encrypto) from his work with Pop Co-Op, a perennial “best of” choice here at PPN. With One Tall Order, Mr. Bruce Gordon gives us elements of new wave, Americana, Beatle-pop and soul. No doubt the product of hours upon hours spent with his transistor radio tuned to his favorite radio station, Its sound is familiar yet brand new. And pretty damn satisfying, I might add.
Those who enjoy well written lyrical content are in for a real treat throughout the entirety of One Tall Order. The relaxed opening guitar strum of “I’m For Gettin’” leads to a brilliant payoff line. The title track feels like any number of John Hiatt tunes and as such is one of my faves on the album. The arrangements are extraordinary with the efforts of Peter Holsapple (organ) and Probyn Gregory (horn arrangements) as standouts.
That said, the beautifully soulful “I Didn’t Know” is the creme de la creme. Gordon must have known this was a good one as its an early track on the LP. I’m left wondering why “I Didn’t Know” isn’t all over the airwaves. It’s catchy as Hell and benefits from a wonderful horn arrangement and vocal performance. And the pleasing background vocals of The Gordonaires (Evie Sands, Teresa Cowles, Jason Berk, Norman Kelsey, Adam Marsland and Peter Holsapple) are the icing on the cake.
