Fantastic Cat – The Very Best of
Normally, I’m a dog person. But when Fantastic Cat’s The Very Best of Fantastic Cat fell onto my lap, it demanded my attention. They’re a super group of sorts. Each member of Fantastic Cat writes and all have viable solo careers. And each member has contributed their own compositions to this 10 track collection.
While Fantastic Cat isn’t really a power pop act, there’s no shortage of melodic hooks. You’ll hear Dylan influences in some songs and White Album era Beatles in others. The commonality is that each and every song is well crafted and performed admirably.
More Than One Way To Skin A Cat
Stylistically, Fantastic cat moves from pop to folk and back again with a natural ease. Three tracks stand out in particular. “Nobody’s Coming To Get You” is a sobering look at adulthood. Sounding like something between Traveling Willburys and Fountains of Wayne, its a real winner. The guys demonstrate a keen sense of humor with “The Gig”, an up tempo tragic comedy about hitting the road.
While songs about friendship generally make me cringe, “Amigo” captured my attention. You can sing along to it and the sentiments sound genuine without being sappy. You have to have a heart of stone not to like this song.
