Exclusive Video World Premier – Dave Birk’s “Hey Jody”

Carolina Orange is proud to be the exclusive, world premier home for Dave Birk’s first music video ‘Hey, Jody’ from the album Speed Queen Mystery Date. This Minneapolis-based popster caught my attention earlier this year and has appeared on this site in a favorable review, a wonderful interview (in association with Powerpop Overdose), and earned a spot on my Top 10 Powerpop for the 1st half of 2012.

We caught up with the Birkman to get the backstory on the video.

As your first video, what made you choose ‘Hey, Jody?’

A buddy of mine (Axel Sasso) rides Ducati motorcycles and, unbeknownst to me, he and a lot of the riders wear these GoPro Hero cameras that attached to the person or the cycle and take footage as they ride. They load them up to YouTube and other riders and rider wannabes watch these videos. And they are very cool, lots of action, some crazy maneuvers and you can feel the speed. Anyway, he posted a long ride of his with my music as the bed and riders he knew started asking about my music. He sold a bunch of CD’s for me in a couple of weeks. So we decided to create something special that would feature his bikes and one of my songs and ‘Hey, Jody’ seemed to fit best to create a motorcycle-themed story.

Who is this Jody?

The song is loosely based on a childhood friend. I’ve long lost track of her, but in my memory she is much like I describe in the lyrics. For the video, I reached out to a high school buddy, T.h. Taylor, who is an outstanding fashion photographer – and a rocker, too. I perused his portfolio and found the perfect ‘Jody’ in Ruthy Boehm. Fortunately, she graciously agreed to do the music video and was, as you will see, fantastic!

What’s next?

I have a couple more videos in process and am finalizing details for my CD release party. A world tour would be nice, but I expect I may have to start a little more modestly and play a few clubs in Minneapolis until things start taking off. I’m hopeful that this music video will have a broad reach to an audience that is likely not familiar with my music. Everyday is a new surprise. I am taking it all in and trying to maximize on the possibilities.

Without further adieu, Here’s “Hey Jody”….
