The Decibels – When Red Lights Flash
The Decibels‘ sound on When Red Lights Flash (the bands’ sixth LP) draws on more than just 60’s British Invasion. In fact, the guys find inspiration in 70’s, 80’s and 90’s music as well. The results are sure to please anyone who loves guitar driven, melodic pop.
On “Why Bother With Us”, a catchy melody embellishes a jangly underpainting with backing vocals providing added flourishes of color. The high energy “Enough” has a definite 80’s power pop feel while the mid-tempo “In Remembrance” features some wonderful harmonies.
A Guitar Aficionado’s Dream
“Today Is The Day” has a definite Who vibe to it and reminds me at times of “I Can’t Explain”. From there, the Decibels change things up a bit with a punk-pop piece entitled “You Don’t Need To Be Afraid”. It sounds a bit like a Bill Stevenson composition with more guitars. The guitars are fabulous on this track by the way – and throughout the entirety of the album for that matter. And “Looking Back” is another impossibly hooky track.
The Decibels are Dean Seavers (Vocals, Guitar), Brent Seavers (Bass, Vocals), Brian Mechado (Drums, Vocals) and Joe Pack (Guitar, Vocals). For those who may recognize Brent Seavers, it is worth nothing that his BS Stands for Brent Seavers was this site’s #2 album of 2021. So if you haven’t heard that one, I strongly suggest you do so.
