CD Review: Matt Truman Ego Trip – AM 1670

Inspired by 70’s AM radio, The Matt Truman Ego Trip has released a very enjoyable EP entitled AM 1670. There are elements of powerpop, R&B and Motown here so there’s something for just about everyone.

The first track on this 4 song EP, “Starry Eyes”, is the catchy with a killer chorus. One might guess that the title is a reference to The Records’ 1979 hit song of the same name and it’s keyboard parts are somewhat reminiscent of The Attractions’ Steve Nieve. “First Kiss” is melodically gorgeous and “No Heart” is an equally memorable track that towards the song’s end employs the chorus to “Don’t Worry Baby” (Ronnie Spector version) to maximum effect. Great way to finish the disc.

I have one criticism. The disc could have worked even better had the production been more radio-friendly. After all, the record is a tribute to ’70’s AM radio. Had Mike Chapman produced this disc, we’d all be talking about the Matt Truman Ego Trip. BUY IT HERE.
