Big Stir Singles – The Yuletide Wave
The Big Stir singles collections are always a treat but this latest one, The Yuletide Wave, takes the Christmas cake. Totaling 21 songs in all, every song here is worthy of your attention. With so much music, it’s impossible to talk about each and every one so we’ll just touch briefly on a few. But don’t misinterpret that. Every song is excellent.
The opening song, Nick Frater’s “Wash Your Hands of Christmas” is thematically appropriate and did I hear this right – Is Santa putting down the reindeer? The Brothers Steve bring some cheer with hand claps, sleigh bells and harmonies on “I Love Christmastime”. There’s the bubble-gummy “All I Want Is You for Christmas” (Kimberley Rew and Lee Cave-Berry) and The Forty Nineteens festive and uber catchy “It’s Christmas Time Again”.
There were some absolutely delightful surprises, too. Spygenius’ “Revels Without a Cause” would have fit nicely on a Beatles Christmas comp or a Dukes of Stratosphere album. Irene Pena gives us a Fabulous Baggies Christmas with “Will You Turn Up (for Christmas)”, a song PF Sloan would probably have enjoyed. And Addison Love’s “Utah Winter” is pop perfection.
I’ve left out a lot of very worthy music. Take it from me, if you’re looking for a Christmas power pop album for this year’s stocking stuffer (or something to soothe you on that long ride to your in-laws for the holidays), there is no better choice than The Big Stir Singles – The Yuletide Wave.
