The Well Wishers – Just So You Know
The opening few seconds of “Here We Go”, the 13th album from The Well Wishers, hints at an undeniable fact. Just So You Know is their most accessible, radio friendly power pop album in recent memory. This batch of Jeff Shelton penned songs have all the guitar jangle, clang and crunch of previous efforts. But the harmonies are sweeter, the hooks abundant and the choruses even more memorable.
Think of it in these terms. Bob Mould’s solo records were outstanding. But his songs with Sugar exceeded any expectations we may have had. They were magic. Similar can be said for Just So You Know. This one will be in rotation for quite some time in my house.
The aforementioned lead in to “Here We Go” pulls us in. From there its a full throttle, power pop thrill ride. “Back Down, Son” chugs along in an understated way before it winds up and delivers a heavyweight punch of a chorus. The keyboard swirl is a nice touch. “Good Side” has an REM-like quality to it that makes it an immediate fave.
It’s Power Pop Guitar-apalooza
The Well Wishers’ signature wall of guitars make “Fed Up” instantly familiar. The jangly “Old Enough To Know” will tickle the fancy of any Mitch Easter disciples out there. And the guitar crunch of “The Bitter End” is positively delicious. There’s so much here to sink your teeth into.
If you’re not yet familiar with the band, think of artists like Bob Mould, The Posies or to a lesser extent, Cheap Trick. If you’re already a fan, then you’re gonna get even more than you had hoped for.
