The Dumbanimals – Thrift Pop
I wish I had heard The Dumbanimals’ album at the time of its release back a few months ago. It would have easily made 2023’s best of power pop list. Near the top. Occasionally punk-pop, once in a while Weezer-like but always hooky and smart, the ten tracks within Thrift Pop are as catchy and engaging as anything I’ve heard in quite some time.
All Meat, No Meat Byproducts
Both “Hook In My Jaw” and “In My Car” share similar production qualities with the aforementioned power pop / guitar pop Gods. With an emphasis on the bassline and choruses that crash like waves on a stormy day, the listener feels positively exhilarated – an immediate satisfaction. After repeated listens, there’s a keen sense of humor that comes to the surface, making it even more rewarding for the listener. Punk pop enthusiasts will dig the up-tempo and hooky selections such as “Doornob”, “Futz” or the hilarious “Scibble”.
While there are only ten tracks in all, every song is a gem. Frankly, I’d much rather have ten outstanding originals than an album with an abundance of tracks containing a few clunkers or one with pointless covers. The Dumbanimals’ Thrift Pop is all meat, no filler.
