Jamie Hoover – Top Banana
Power pop legend Jamie Hoover is back with his first collection of new material since 2019. Top Banana finds the singer-songwriter at the top of his game, offering up four brand new compositions. Michael Ruiz (of Paul Collins’ The Beat) makes a guest appearance on one of its tracks. Still another was co-written by the late, great John Wicks of The Records.
Genghis Khan meets The Spongetones
Top Banana may be Jamie’s most diverse collection of tunes to date. There’s the twang of “Bourbon Understands”, a track that Steve Simels (Stereo Review Magazine) called “a hilarious, alt-country booze ballad” and pop confections such as “Genghis Khan” and “The Obit”. The latter is stylistically similar to Hoover’s Spongetones work.
Jamie brings back the haunting “Repo Man”, first performed on For The Record: A Tribute to John Wicks in memory of the late, great songwriter. The song has been a frequently played track on Little Steven’s Underground Garage and in rotation on his Coolest Songs channel. The EP concludes with “Kim Kardashian” a sarcastic take on the queen of social media.
In the interest of full disclosure, the five tracks on Top Banana were co-written by yours truly. This includes “Repo Man”, a song co-written with Wicks shortly before his passing.
