Dolph Chaney – This Is Dolph Chaney
I understand that Dolph Chaney has been around and creating music since the 80’s. This Is Dolph Chaney, his second album for Big Stir, is my introduction to his work. I was immediately struck by his ability to create a solid pop hook and engaging arrangements.
There’s some really radio friendly stuff here. The synch-intro to “Cuddle Party” gives this tune a new wave feel until you get to a killer hook of a chorus. The guitar driven “Now I Am a Man” is a jangly gem with relatable lyrics and some neat harmonies. The acoustic strum that starts “Pleasant Under Glass” carries the listener into a piece that juxtaposes a bouncy, hummable tune with sobering lyrics. And again, the harmonies are just right.
Every tune on This Is Dolph Chaney is a keeper. However, there’s one that stands out for me more than any other. “My Good Twin” sounds to me as if Dolph was channeling the Richard Thompson of the late 80’s or early 90’s. Love this tune.
