The Popravinas – Willy Nilly
With past releases, The Popravinas have managed to maintain that California carefree vibe while also have a bit of a Stones-like swagger. With their new one, Willy Nilly, its more of the same. If it had a genre label, it might be surfer twang.
The Stones vibe is immediately in evidence with the opening track, “Talkin’ Out Loud”. It’s a classic bar room burner. “Tim’s Basement” is a little ragged but a fun listen nonetheless. Little touches like the guitar twang of “Did Ya” and the hand claps and sax outro of “Sofia (CMU)” are the kind of elements that make this an engaging record. The latter is the kind of character sketch I get a kick out of.
“Almost Sick” may be the best track of all, with lots of twangy guitar and a great set of lyrics.
The Popravinas’ Willy Nilly is available through CD Baby in digital or physical mediums. If you like The Doughboys, The Beat Farmers and The Fleshtones, then you might like these guys.
