The Yum Yums – For Those About To Pop!
Norway’s The Yums Yums are back with their fifth album, the operative word here being FUN. Imagine if Dee Dee and Johnny joined The Sweet and you’ll get the idea. For Those About to Pop! is a power pop-glam hybrid with gummy sing along choruses and a Ramones guitar punch, all performed with an infectious enthusiasm.
The souring guitars of the title track lead the listener right into one of the catchiest choruses of 2020. The harmonies are spot on and the chorus ends on an emphatic note that makes this a great anthem song. And I love the lyric “you’ll always have a friend in the 3 chord pop song”.
First rate power pop pure pure and simple.
“Baby Baby” is all Ramones. The only thing missing is Joey’s voice. That said, Morten Henriksen is no slouch himself. If you miss The Sweet as much as I do, you’ll really dig “Bubblegum Baby”. “Lie To Me” and “She’s got Everything” are first rate power pop pure pure and simple. If you’re a fan of harmonies, you’ll love these. “Let’s Go Crazy” is the ultimate feel good song with a cease the moment message that really resonates with me.
“Crust on You” and “Can I Come Over” are great, single worthy tracks, too. In fact, the album reminds me of a Buzzcocks record in that respect. Or a 1910 Fruitgum Co. record, for that matter. Not the sound so much as the fact that For Those About To Pop! Is more a collection of singles than an album. And I really love that.
