Powerpop Review: The Rubinoos’ 45

Those of us who remember the heyday of the genre will recall The Rubinoos and their 70’s powerpop classic “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend”. The song has been introduced to new audiences over the years by some contemporary bands such as Farrah and Avril Levine. In the case of the latter, she decided to cop the melody (and pretty much everything else) and call it her own. If you’ve ever heard Levine’s version, it is in fact a blatant rip-off of the Rubinoos’ powerpop classic. But, if imitation is the greatest form of flattery, then it says something about your work when your more commercially successful peers choose to steal your material.

Fast forward over 30 years later and The Rubinoos’ penchant for crafting catchy 2-and-a-half minute classics hasn’t changed much. The proof is in their latest release entitled 45. As memorable as their ’79 classic was, the new disc is chock full of great melodies, harmonies and hooks that stick like bubblegum.

There are new classics here along with some delightful diversions. An a cappella “Rhapsody in the Rain” and a tribute to The Kingsmen’s classic “Louie Louie” are great fun. However, the proof of their superlative songwriting skills are in the infectious melodies throughout the remainder of the LP.

“Run Mascara Run” is classic powerpop and a great start to the LP. “Does Suzie Like Boys” is catchy as all get-go and “That Thing You Do” will instantly transport you to a 60’s Cavern Club show. However, the best track on the LP may be “You Are Here”, a sugar-sweet slice of bubblegum that would do Ron Dante proud.
