Nick Piunti – Heart Inside Your Head
Nick Piunti has become a favorite of ours over the last few years. In fact, 2020’s Downtime was the site’s #1 power pop album of the year. His latest, Heart Inside Your Head, has many of the same characteristics; whopping hooks, big choruses and even bigger guitars.
Right away, one can’t help but notice Ryan Allen’s contributions. Whereas Piunti took the #1 spot in 2020 with Downtime, Allen took the top spot on 2021’s best of power pop list with his 60’s pastiche otherwise known as What It Rip.
Allen contributes his guitar to some of the album’s best tracks including its opener, “My Mind (Plays Tricks On Me)”. It’s another uber-catchy Piunti number with Allen’s distinctive guitar work taking it to an even higher level.
And when Allen doesn’t rip it (he’s on four songs), guitarist Joe Daksiewicz does a more than commendable job on the remaining tracks. His guitar chime carries one of the album’s finest tracks, “I Want Everything”. Keven Darnell’s piano and guest vocalist Kristin von B make this one something special.
The last thing I want to hear are songs about surviving the pandemic. The subject has been beaten to death. That said, “Hope’s Up” is so good it stands as the exception (if that’s indeed what it’s about). The melody is infectious not to mention the guitar work and killer chorus.
