Jon Flynn – Citrus
As one half of Diamond Hands, Jon Flynn has given us three outstanding albums. He and Joel Wall, the other half of Diamond Hands, will be releasing their fourth album later this year. In the meantime, Jon gives us Citrus, his first solo album since 2008’s A Birthday, A Wedding and a Fish.
I’m immediately struck by the quality of his vocals – the same kind of soulful quality Marc Bolan had. The dark, emotive delivery makes “Somewhere to Run” a terrific opener. The more upbeat, Beatles-esque “Back to You” may be a breakup song but it’s got a positive, reaffirming message.
Do we need another sappy, piano driven love song? One listen to “Be with You” and the answer is a resounding “YES”. If 12 bar blues is your thing, then “Praying Man” will be a revelation. Flynn’s voice is ideal for this piece. The harmonies are absolutely wonderful. Speaking of which, the album’s next track, entitled “Wonderful”, benefits from ringing guitars and a simple, catchy chorus.
Throughout the entirety of Jon Flynn’s Citrus, I’m struck by the strength of the songwriting and the less is more nature of it’s production. From an instrumental standpoint, guitar, bass and keyboards are about it – and yet it sounds complete. His vocals work wonderfully on their own and the harmonies are just right.
Jon Flynn’s Citrus is one of my favorite albums so far in 2021. I’m guessing that you’ll feel the same way. If you want your music on CD, then Kool Kat Musik is the place to get it. Or, if digital is your thing, head to Bandcamp. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
