Jon Flynn – Cherry Cherry
You may remember Jon Flynn as one half of Diamond Hands. He and Joel Wall, the other half of the band, have four outstanding albums to their credit. When we last left Flynn, he had just released his second solo album entitled Citrus. With nods to Marc Bolan, it was quite the tuneful affair and finished the year on our top ten “best of” list.
A New Spin On 60’s Soul
Cherry Cherry, Flynn’s latest, mines a similar vein. This time around, the sound is more stripped down while employing elements of electro-pop. The hooks are still very much intact. However, Cherry may remind you more of The Cars than T. Rex. The drums are bit higher up in the mix and the guitar parts a bit more judiciously implemented. Basically, it conforms more to today’s production sensibilities than to those of the 70’s or 80’s.
The opening track, “Game You’re Playing”, bounces along to an infectious beat. Exquisite harmonies and string arrangements make this track (and the entire album) instantly memorable. “Where To Start” owes a lot to 60’s soul. The handclaps and harmonies bring us right back to the time AM radio was king. That said, the runaway hit for me is “Brush Your Hair”. Its classic power pop, a start to finish hook.
