Joe Sullivan – Growing Up Shlockstar
Every once in a while I hear an unexpected, delightful surprise. Joe Sullivan’s Growing Up Schlockstar is a case in point. Lyrically intelligent with hooks a plenty, we’re treated to a power pop flavored guided tour of Sullivan’s school years. His thoughts and character sketches bring back some memories and a few laughs, too.
The crunchy “Mr. Positivity” (we all know him) starts things off perfectly, leading us into the more reflective “Gifted and Talented”. “Secret Weapon” introduces us to the teenage femme fatale in a most amusing way.
All of these tracks are catchy and lyrically astute but “Time Machine” is the one that takes the cake for me. This one is first rate bubble-pop, replete with Sweet era guitars and a chorus you’ll want to sing at the top of your lungs while driving down the interstate.
By the way, Joe Sullivan is on Futureman Records. That’s the same label responsible for Chris Richards and the Subtractions’ Peaks and Valleys.
Joe Sullivan’s Growing Up Schlockstar is one of my favorite albums so far this year. You can pick up your copy at Joe’s Bandcamp page or at Kool Kat Musik. GET IT.
