Cheap Cassettes – They’ll Never Forgive You For Pop
The album title is telling. The Cheap Cassettes have always given us a solid power pop sound as evidenced by their 2022 release, ever since ever since, and various other releases over the last ten years. Each fits snugly into the power pop mold, albeit with a Stones like swagger. Their latest, They’ll Never Forgive You For Pop, leans more decidedly towards roots/garage rock. And that’s a good thing. The hooks are still big. The swagger is still intact. And the addition of another songwriter to the band makes Cheap Cassettes even more formidable than before.
Furiously Fast Fun
Chris Matthews is joined by Scott Sutherland (Model Rockets), both showcasing their songwriting chops as well as their vocal and guitar talents. As good as past Cheap Cassettes releases have been, this collection of material is a cut above the others. “New Gun In Town” is a rocker with a great guitar riff and a hooky chorus. Sometimes it reminds me of The Tearaways. Other times, The Plimsouls.
The band puts the pedal to the metal with “Bad Xerox”. Furiously fast and catchy as Hell, it’s a critique of the guy who takes your place after the breakup. There’s a definite Stones feel to “Don’t You Want to Know”. “Down In Mexico” could be a lost Fleshtones track.
