David Myhr – Lucky Day

David Myhr – Lucky Day

In 2012, David Myhr released Soundshine, his first solo LP after having worked with The Merrymakers for nearly two decades. While Soundshine featured perhaps the best single in 2014, Myhr remained the embodiment of a term power pop fans have used entirely too often. Big in Japan. With Lucky Day, perhaps that will change.

A research project of sorts, Lucky Day is Myhr’s answer to fundamental questions such as “Where do musical ideas come from?” and “Why is one idea more appealing than the other?”. In the words of producer Brad Jones, Myhr’s sound has progressed from “youthful power pop to a more reflective and lasting sound”.

Written with Bleu (Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez), the album begins with a can’t-miss single entitled “Jealous Sun”. The uber-catchy chorus makes this a great choice to start the album. We all know (or in some cases, are) “My Negative Friend”, a piano driven pop gem with infectious harmonies. “Every Day It Rains” is a more contemplative David Myhr as well as being the prettiest song we’ve heard in some time.

Other highlights include the title track, “If You Really Think It’s Over”, the Burt Bacharach/Hal David influenced “Wait Until The Moment”, the Graham Nash penned “Military Madness” and ELO-like “Spellbound”. These last two songs are CD only bonus tracks.

Easily one of the best albums of this year so far, Lucky Day is available digitally at iTunes or on CD through Kool Kat Musik (pre-order). You’d be crazy not to pick this one up.
