Doublepluspop – Too Loud, Too Fast, Too Much
What is it they say about the best laid plans? Some 20 years after it’s expected release, DoublePlusPop’s Too Loud, Too Fast, Too Much has arrived. The album saw its digital release last year and now Kool Kat Musik has released the band’s “debut” effort on CD.
Recording began in the late 90’s when things came to a halt due to budgetary reasons. The tapes, stored with its sound engineer Coy Green, were resurrected thanks to some found time courtesy of the COVID virus.
Not surprisingly, Paul Averitt’s songs are reminiscent of a few late 90’s popsters. Matthew Sweet immediately comes to mind along with The Greenberry Woods and of course, the G.O.A.T. – The Beatles. In short, Too Loud, Too Fast, Too Much is chock full of pop hooks, memorable melodies and guitar crunch.
Highlights include the uber-catchy “My Verona”, the irresistible harmonies of “Everyone”, and the slower “You Can’t Be Serious”, a song whose guitar walk-up reminds me a little bit of White Album era Beatles. My favorite track however may be “Coincide”. It’s melody is positively infectious – so much so that it ranks up there with the best of The Greenberry Woods.
Doublepluspop is Paul Averitt, Jon Lenzer on guitar, Mike Bowman on bass and Neil Saunders on drums. It may be too loud, too fast or too much but it isn’t too late to get your copy at Kool Kat Musik. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
