Classic Ruins – Forget About It
Every once in a while I hear something that makes me wonder how I could have missed something so, well, me. Something with the urgency of a good Ramones record and the sly humor of The Beat Farmers. Classic Ruins are my newest favorite and their latest, Forget About It, is nothing short of a musical Molotov cocktail.
They explode right out of the gate with “Forget About It”, a hooky garage rocker of the highest order. “Little OCD” is cut from the same cloth and similarly catchy with the kind of guitar crunch that would give the Cap’n a run for his money. “Cheap Champagne” must be fabulous when performed live. There’s a great instrumental version of “Please, Please, Me”. “Lights Out” is a brilliant choice of covers.
My new favorite Christmas song of all time has to be “Scrooge’s Body Shop”. It’s funny as hell and Frank Rowe’s delivery is magnificent. His vocal inflections are delightfully similar to that of one of my favorite vocalist of all time and The King of bar room bungholery – the late, great Country Dick Montana.
Great Power Pop from Boston
I’m not sure whether to call it an album or an EP (there are 9 songs in all including several instrumentals) but I know one thing – it’s guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. Bound for this site’s Best of 2020 list, you can GET IT AT RUM BAR RECORDS, Boston’s favorite power pop label.
