Mike Viola – Rock of Boston
The passing of Ducky Carlisle, a veteran of the Boston music scene for decades, made one thing readily apparent. While it is true that little is accomplished without looking forward, sometimes it’s best to take a step back and admire the view. Mike Viola has come a long way since teaming up with fellow Bostonians Carlisle and McAuley (Bleu) to give us the criminally overlooked Aquavia.
Shamefully, Viola fell off of my radar after that – until last year’s Paul McCarthy. The album seemed an exercise in self catharsis while maintaining the requisite hooks and harmonies necessary to keep his fans engaged. It was one of 2023’s best surprises. Now, Viola gives us another retrospective glimpse into his musical journey with Rock of Boston.
Welcome To the Thunderdome
Brian Myers, a character from Viola’s childhood gets top billing in the opening track, “Brian Myers You’re No Cherry Garcia”. Lyrically, it reminds me of the kind of impromptu storytelling one might expect from fellow Bostonian Jonathan Richman. Things rock a little harder on “The Bansch” and “Welcome To the Thunderdome”. The latter would make a good theme song for The Pat McAfee Show.
By contrast, the mostly acoustic “Rock of Boston” and “Bonanza” are quiet and contemplative. The former is a diary set to a melody. The very personal lyrical content make it relatable to anyone, anywhere. “Diamonds of New York” is a melodic gem. Viola was joined by Jake Sinclair on Bass and Brendon Urie on drums.
