The Psychedelic Porn Crumpets’ Musical Schizophrenia

The Psychedelic Porn Crumpets’ Musical Schizophrenia

This (their fifth album) is my introduction to Perth’s Psychedelic Porn Crumpets. It’s an unforgettable name. As unique as their sound. With Night Gnomes, the Crumpets empty the entire musical Frigidaire to create an aural casserole unlike anything I’ve ever heard before. Are they the first psych-pop-metal-shoegaze band ever? Maybe.

Front man Jack McEwan draws inspiration from so many different styles. Compelling lyrics hang from sonic soundscapes reminiscent of bands such as Swervedriver or My Bloody Valentine. However, distinctive, engaging melodies separate these compositions from those of the shoegaze bands of the 80’s and 90’s. This makes Lenny Kravitz a better comparison. And then other times, you’ll hear Black Sabbath.

The powerful “Lava Lamp Pisco” barrels through one’s aural headspace like a paisley freight train. McEwan and company let an infectious melody come to the surface on the acoustic “Dread & Better”, one of the album’s better tracks. The string arrangement at the end is perfect. It’s a wonderful composition.

The static that begins “Bubblegum Infinity” behaves like a radio dial, leading to a more distinct, clearer vocal. It’s like tuning not the local top 40 station on your father’s transistor radio. It’s an effective tool because this track is by far the most accessible on Night Gnomes. The chorus is a monster hook and one of the most memorable singles of the year.

When Psych, Metal & Power Pop Meet

For power pop fans how prefer the singer/songwriter sound, The Psychedelic Porn Crumpets may not be your thing. But for those who like their power pop with an emphasis on power and a psychedelic twist, you’re going to really dig these guys.
