Sun Sawed in 1/2 – Before the Fall

Monster hooks, big harmonies and a whole lot more. In ten words or less, that’s how I would describe the new EP, Before the Fall, from Tim Rose and his band, Sun Sawed in 1/2.

The irresistibly catchy “Twist of Lemon” is the ideal opening track. It’s immediately accessible, radio friendly power pop. There’s a game within the game, too. The rhyming scheme fools the ear into expecting the word lime. Instead, we get lemon – or is it just me?  You be the judge.

There’s so much going on in “Call For a Good Time”. It reminds me of my favorite Beatles or XTC compositions. That said, “Too High Strung” may be my favorite track on Before the Fall. It’s got a more soulful vibe with the guitar taking a stylistic detour.

I won’t go through the new EP song by song. With more than a few twists and turns packed into just six total tracks, I feel as if I’d be spoiling the best parts of a good book.
