Amoeba Teen – Amoeba Teen

Amoeba Teen – Amoeba Teen

While self-titled, the new Amoeba Teen full length is not their debut release. However, this album differs from 2019’s Medium Wave. This go ‘round, the band tried to capture the urgency of their live sound. I’m pleased to say, it worked to perfection. Amoeba Teen has an urgency, a spontaneity that gives the music – for lack of a better word – oomph.

“Mainstream” lulls the listener into a false sense of tranquility before it smacks us in the kisser. It’s kick-ass catchy and a great way to start the disc off. I feel secure in saying that it also breaks new ground in pop music history – rhyming kooky with Suzuki.

The band captures the sound of 80’s radio with the up-tempo chug of “Maybe He’s Just Not That Into You” and the Cars-like vibe of “New Material World”. “January” has the requisite twang thanks to the efforts of Patrick Lyons on pedal steel – and the chorus is catchy as catchy can be.

Other highlights include the bouncy “Melody Told You” and the jangle and irrepressible melody of “Monica Wakes Up”.

Amoeba Teen are Carl Bayliss on drums and vocals, Mark Britton on guitar and vocals, Simon Muttitt on bass and Mike Turner on guitar and vocals.
