Luther Russell – Medium Cool

Luther Russell – Medium Cool

The Marshall McLuhan reference in the title had me immediately curious. I guess that’s an irony unto itself. That said, Luther Russell’s Medium Cool is much more than your average listening experience.

“Deep Feelings” has an unforgettable bass line and a swagger that makes it a terrific opening track. “The Sound of Rock ‘n’ Roll” and “Corvette Summer” are thematically in keeping with what we may have come to expect. However, upon further examination and when consumed collectively, these tracks as well (as the others on Medium Cool) become a celebration of the rock ‘n’ roll medium.

Some of the songs on Medium Cool are among the best of the year so far. Others, less engaging. But as a single, cohesive experience, this ranks among the better albums of the year thus far. Pick this one up on CD from Kool Kat Musik or in digital form from Luther’s Bandcamp page.
