Super Satellite CD Review, Jason & The Scorchers tour with Ian Hunter

Super Satellite CD Review, Jason & The Scorchers tour with Ian Hunter

When I was a kid I always thought of Dunellen NJ as the “land of nuns and nudie bars”. Now, I like nuns. And I like nudie bars. And, thanks to bands like Meyerman and Super Satellite, I’m starting to like Dunellen too.

super-satellite-coverA friend recommended that I give Super Satellite’s debut CD a listen. It was released back in 2009 to very little fanfare and there isn’t much about the band on the internet other than their MySpace page. As far as I can tell though, this is the band’s one and only release.

With all ten songs clocking in at around 3 minutes, several with a punch that would make Weezer proud, Super Satellite is worth more than a few listens. From start to finish it’s great guitars and hooky choruses that take the best of Brit-pop and add a little Jersey grit.

Super-Satellite“Sleepwalking” has a 60’s Brit-pop vibe and is rapidly becoming my favorite song on the CD. ‘A Little Reaction” has an infectious chorus that will find it’s way into your psyche and hold on for dear life. If you can listen to this song without singing along, I’ll buy you the biggest hunk of prosciutto in Bloomfield. There’s a cannoli chaser in it for you if you can hold back from playing air guitar.

The guitars in the final cut, “I Do I Don’t”, are just a bit reminiscent of REM. There are plenty of other influences here too, all good and none too derivative.

JASON & THE SCORCHERS TOUR NEWS

jason-and-the-scorchers-3Regional favorites Jason & The Scorchers are touring again…sort of. They’ll open for rock legend Ian Hunter on his UK tour starting in mid March. There is no better live experience than seeing Ian Hunter do his thing but Jason & Co. are not far behind. Like Hunter, JATS pack more adrenaline into a set than Barry Bonds on a ‘roid rush. Lets hope Ian decides to take the show stateside and brings JATS with him.

Back in the late 70’s and early 80’s the Scorchers were simply the best blend of country music and raw punk energy that the world had ever seen. I think it was a trouser press writer who coined the phrase “cow punk” when describing their sound.

From the time my daughter was in diapers she loved country music but couldn’t pronounce the band’s name. But she could say “cow punk” and, when we’d get in the car to drive somewhere, the first thing out of her mouth was often “play that cow punk, daddy!”. Ironically, Jason does a kids show on the side now and he’s quite good at it apparently.

More on that another time.
